Do:

  • Research the artist – Before you commission an artwork, make sure you do some research on the artist. Check out their portfolio and read up on their history and style. See if their art speaks to you.

  • Set a budget – It’s important to set a budget for your artwork and stick to it. You don’t want to be stuck with an artwork you can’t afford.

  • Communicate your vision – Make sure you explain your vision for the artwork to the artist so that they can create something that meets your expectations.

  • Get a contract – Before you commission an artwork, make sure to get a contract that outlines all the details, including the price, payment schedule, timeline and any other expectations.

Don’t:

  • Rush the process – Art takes time and rushing the process can lead to an artwork that doesn’t meet your expectations. Give the artist enough time to create the artwork and don’t rush them.

  • Go for the cheapest option – Just because an artwork is cheap doesn’t mean it will be of high quality. Make sure to research and find an artist whose work speaks to you and offers reasonable prices.

  • Push the artist too hard – Pushing the artist to create the artwork faster or altering the design too much can lead to an artwork that doesn’t meet either of your expectations. Respect the artist’s creative process.

  • Neglect to ask questions – If there’s something you want to know about the artwork or the process, make sure to ask the artist. It’s better to get all the information up front.

Commissioning an artwork can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it’s important to take the time to do it right. Following these do’s and don’ts will ensure that you get the most out of your commissioned artwork.
